ECE104 is a regulation that establishes guidelines for the use of retro-reflective safety markings on heavy goods vehicles operating on our roads. It has already been introduced in a number of European countries.

If you own, operate or service any goods vehicle over 7.5 tonnes or trailers over 3.5 tonnes then you need to know about this piece of legislation.

The regulation will be mandatory from July 2011 for all newly registered HGVs over 7.5 tonnes and trailers over 3.5 tonnes.

Markings should consist of Front: White Sides: Yellow or white Rear: Red

There are two options to choose from; a complete contour line marking or a partial contour marking.

Partial contour markings are the minimum requirement. Contour markings should cover at least 80% of the total length and width of the vehicle/trailer and should be as close as practicable to the edges

A number of companies have produced easy to apply ECE104 approved retro-reflective tape, with one of the 'leading lights' in the industry being 3M.

Their range of homologated rero-reflective marking tapes carry the compulsory "E-mark" and meet all the requirements of regulation ECE104.

They are easy to apply, resistant to peeling and other damage and will retain their brightness and colour even in the harshest working conditions.
